Also, learn basic courtesy words like the equivalents for hello, goodbye, please, and thank you, as well as basic command words like stop, yes, and no. Other words you need to learn are target nouns like food, drink, bus, plane, bank, hospital, etc. It may further help if you could show the person some pictures of what you are referring to.
